Freediving in Dahab: Why It's One of the Best Places to Learn

Ask experienced freedivers where to learn, and Dahab comes up again and again. It isn’t hype. There are specific, physical reasons this small town on the Red Sea is one of the easiest places on earth to take your first breath-hold dives, and to keep progressing after that.

Cold water fights you. Dahab doesn’t.

Learning to freedive is mostly learning to relax. The problem is that cold, dark, choppy water does the opposite: it triggers stress, your breathing tightens, and your body braces before you’ve even started.

Dahab removes all of that. The water sits around 26°C for much of the year, warm enough that most people dive in a thin suit and never feel cold. There are no waves at the training sites and effectively no current. When the environment is this calm, your nervous system follows. You relax, and relaxation is the whole game.

Visibility that changes how it feels

The Red Sea is famously clear, and in Dahab you regularly get 30 metres or more of visibility. That matters more than it sounds. When you can see the line, the bottom, and your buddy the whole way down, diving feels safe and orientation is easy. Nervous beginners settle far faster when the blue isn’t a mystery.

The sites: honest version

There are two dive sites you’ll hear about, and it’s worth being straight about them.

  • The Lighthouse. A gentle reef that starts shallow and drops to a wall, a short walk from the center. This is where courses and most training happen. Calm, easy to access, and ideal for building depth step by step.
  • The Blue Hole. One of the most famous dive sites in the world, and yes, it’s near Dahab, about 20 minutes away by car. It’s a stunning deep site for divers who are ready for it. You don’t need it to learn, but if you want to dive it, we’ll take you when you’re ready.

You don’t have to choose between them. Most people learn at the Lighthouse and visit the Blue Hole once they’ve got the depth and the confidence.

Everything in one place

The last piece is logistics, or the lack of them. Because we’re based at The Gate Hotel, with our own 25m pool and classroom, you can sleep, eat, do your theory, and walk to the water without organising a thing. On a freediving trip, not having to think about logistics is worth more than you’d expect. Your energy goes into diving.

When to come

Dahab is a year-round destination. Summers are hot and the water is warmest; winters are mild with slightly cooler water but plenty of sun. There’s no bad season to freedive here, only personal preference.

Where to start

If you’ve never dived, an Introduction session in the pool is the gentlest possible first step. If you’re ready to certify, the Beginner Course takes you from zero to a recognised certification in two and a half days. Either way, Dahab makes it easier than you think.
