AIDA vs SSI: Which Freediving Certification Should You Choose?
If you’re booking your first freediving course, you’ll quickly run into a choice: AIDA or SSI? It sounds like a big decision. It isn’t. But it’s worth understanding what you’re choosing between, so here’s the honest version from people who teach both every week.
The short answer
For your first certification, AIDA 2 and SSI Level 1 are equivalent. Same core skills, same depth (20 metres with a buddy), same international recognition. If you just want to get in the water and learn, pick either one and move on. You are not making a mistake with either.
The differences are real but small, and they mostly show up in the paperwork, the online materials, and the way each agency structures its levels, not in what you actually do underwater.
What each one is
AIDA (International Association for the Development of Apnea) is the older, more competition-rooted agency. It’s the body behind many of the world records you read about. Its courses have a strong technical and performance flavour, and a lot of serious freedivers hold AIDA certifications.
SSI (Scuba Schools International) comes from the scuba world and brings that structure with it: polished digital learning materials, a clean app, and a familiar system if you’ve ever done a scuba course. Its freediving program is well organised and easy to follow.

At The Gate Freediving, our Beginner Course certifies you as AIDA 2 or SSI Level 1, and our Advanced Course as AIDA 3 or SSI Level 2. The requirements are the same for both agencies at each level.
So how do you actually choose?
A few honest tie-breakers:
- You like polished apps and digital materials? SSI’s learning platform is excellent.
- You’re drawn to the sport and competition side? AIDA has deeper roots there.
- A friend or club you’ll dive with uses one of them? Match them, it makes buddying up simpler.
- Genuinely don’t care? Then you’ve understood the point. Pick either.
You can also cross over later. Both agencies accept an equivalency evaluation, so nothing is permanent.
What matters far more than the logo
Here’s the thing we tell everyone: the agency on your card matters far less than who teaches you. A patient instructor, small groups, calm water, and real safety will shape you as a freediver. The certification just records that you got there.
